Background:

Since the turn of the 21st century, the worldwide political arena has faced unparalleled challenges, including terrorist insurgents, the spread of life-threatening diseases and global warming.  Social scientists theorize that these unpredictable and harmful events depress economic growth and global development.  The need for strong leadership has never been more important.

Today’s world leaders must understand the challenges that impact global development.  In facing the spread diseases such HIV/AIDS and Asian bird flu, for example, leaders must understand how to adapt by implementing new strategies and effectively communicating them to protect the public.  They also must learn how a challenge like this impacts local economies and how they can promote the development of social capital.

Academicians and publicly elected officials must work together to identify ways to foster global development and transformation in spite of living in a turbulent world.

The Conference:

Trained leadership can help prevent some challenges that hinder development and reduce the impact of others.  To this end, the College of Health and Public Affairs at the University of Central Florida proposes a one-day international conference titled “The Challenges of Global Development and Transformational Leadership.”  The conference, to be held on Friday October 26th at the UCF campus, will focus on the impact of leadership, both strong and weak, on global development as exemplified in fields such as economics, political science and medicine.  Conference speakers will possess strong academic and professional experience in international development, as well as a vested interest in global development beyond theory to include practice.  Faculty members and students from UCF and national and international communities will be invited to present academic work as it relates to the field of global development.

UCF’s Doctoral Program in Public Affairs will bring together the nation’s leading scholars to share their scholarship and strategic agenda for resolving the most urgent global development issues of our time.  This annual research forum will be a gathering of change agents in their field to address best-practice solutions for perfecting our community and nation’s proactive response for global development, evaluate global development centers and identify successful stories in transforming global health and development.  We invite your active participation in this exciting conference and sincerely hope that you may join us.  The conference is an annual event sponsored by UCF’s Center for Community Partnerships and the Doctoral Program in Public Affairs.

The conference will generate debates on important issues pertaining to health and public affairs research, build consensus on the domains of scientific inquiry relevant to public services, identify evidence-based approaches to enhance quality and efficiency of services organizations, and guide the strategic development of research partnerships with community agencies.  The conference will be organized into three parts: 1) speakers and commentators on health and public affairs research and practice, 2) research project presentations and 3) research poster presentations.
